James Haskel Owens

Officer Owens was with the Kansas City Police Department for 12 years, serving as a police officer for 9 years. Previously to working in law enforcement, Officer Owens served with the United States Army during World War I. He worked as a police guard at the hospital for four years at the time of his death.
A patient escaped from two straight jackets and escaped his room before Officer Owens arrived. Officer Owens persuaded the patient to return to his room to change clothes but as they walked to the room the patient struck Officer Owens, knocking him to the floor and causing him to lose consciousness. The patient was subdued by other orderlies and after Officer Owens regained consciousness he was given first aid and finished out his shift. Officer Owens went home that evening, complained of pain and went to Menorah Hospital for treatment. On December 23, 1947 Officer Owens was admitted to General Hospital where he died that day.
Officer Owens, 50, was survived by his wife, Marjorie, child, and sister, Zepora Franks.
